We’ve always wanted to share a day in our classroom with you. We thought maybe it’d be great to invite people in but not too many people can take a day off to visit our classroom, not to mention, many of you live thousands of miles away! We thought maybe we’d videotape our day and post it but we couldn’t think of too many people who had a spare seven hours to watch what happens in our classroom! There had to be another way.
We tried to figure out how we could take a seven hour day and narrow it down to a minute or less. Then, we determined, we should do a time-lapse video! We placed our document camera in the corner of the room and set it to take a picture every minute from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. That’s a total of 405 pictures! In the end, it put together a video for us. We added a little bit of music to it and now we’re able to share our entire day with you!
We hope you enjoyed being in our class for a little while! We’re glad you were able to join us!
*What did you think about seeing our day in 55 seconds?*
*What else might you use a time-lapse video for?*
GREAT WEBSITE I LOVE THE NAME THE AVERY BUNCH.
Dear Mr Avery’s class,
You’re video was really cool. You looked like you had a really busy day
We are from Cranbourne East Primary School in Australia and we would love it if you could comment on our blog: http://gr6ceps.global2.vic.edu.au/
We might try the same activity and see what our classroom looks like over a day.
From 6R @ Cranbourne East Primary School
Dear Mr. Avery,
I have a question about the 55 second video. How many pictures did you take the whole video? I hope you reply!
From,
Ashley K.
Hi Ashley,
Thanks so much for writing in! I actually didn’t have to take any of the pictures. I set our document camera to take them for me. It ended up being a little bit over 400 pictures though! I’m glad I didn’t have to take that many!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
I am a great admirer of your blog work. This is another example of a fresh idea, at least to me. This calendar year I’ve started to blog using Posterous, nI am now planning to switch to Edublog, so I am delighted to see that that’s the system you use. Your blog is an exhillerating place to visit.
I’ve tried a time lapse of our playtime, it had moments that reminded me of impressionist painting. I might do one of our lunchtime canteen… now thatwould need a soundtrack.
Thanks for all the great work that your students and yourself do.
Mr E

Dear David Eldridge,
Thank you for coming on the blog and leaving a comment. We are glad that you like what we are doing. we are also glad that you are using the same systems. We hope to hear from you again soon.
Mr. Avery’s student,
Bryan C.
Dear Avery,
Spending 55 seconds in your class was pretty cool. I enjoyed how you kept your class excited and had their attention the time that you guys spent together.
Hi Mr. Avery`s class,
It was awesome how you made that video go through your day really fast! I enjoyed watching it. It felt like I got to experience being in your class!
P.S
I loved the music. It really went with the video!
Cheers Mercedes 🙂
Miss B`s Block
Hi Mr. Avery and class,
I’m wondering if someone can explain how you do your homework challenge. I thought I saw a cool homework graph in one of your videos and would love to hear how it motivates you or keeps track of homework.
Thanks!
Mrs. Butler in Kirkland, Washington
Dear Mr. Avery,
We love your Blog. We have a half day today but we don’t think that a day in 55 seconds is possible! Our schedule is we get in the class and do morning work, centers, math, walk to success, lunch, science, specials, pack-up and then go home. We say that a time lapse video could be helpful because it tells about your day and things that you usually do. Why might a time lapse viedo not be useful?
Sincerely,
Kirsten S. and Emma D.
Dear Kirsten and Emma,
I don’t think you could learn a whole lot if school really only lasted 55 seconds! By the time you put your backpack away it’d be time to take it back out and head home!
We thought the time-lapse video was very helpful for the same reason! It let us look back at our day to see everything we had done!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr Avery and class,
What a wonderful idea! Your blog is fantastic – it has so many interesting posts. 🙂
I will be very excited to share your post with my Grade 2/3 class when we return to school this Monday, and I am sure they will love it. Hopefully we will make one of our own to post on our blog too. You could visit our blog at http://gabriellelavars.global2.vic.edu.au
From Miss Lavars at Napoleons Primary School, Australia.
Dear Miss Lavars,
We’d be more than happy to visit your blog! We’re always looking for new and exciting blogs to visit and to learn from.
We’re happy to have you visit. Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving a comment!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Hi my name is Edna. I am a student from Noel Elementary, I am a student of Mr. Chamberlain. I like how you did the video. Here is the link to my blog http://noellitleprincess.blogspot.com/.
Hi Mr. Avery’s Class,
After watching your time-lapse camera on Tech Night, I’ve come up with a few ideas, as Mr. Avery challenged us with thinking about (never end a sentence with a preposition). Film an ice cube melting, a banana ripening (yeah, that might take awhile), bring in a green leaf or something like that and watch it shrink and shrivel, watch mold grow on food (always a good time) – you’ll probably need to make a moist environment and my last suggestion and I’ll go, film a spot in your classroom and see how many people pass by during the day – could be a spot on the floor, the pencil sharpener, etc., a tight shot (if that’s possible with the camera). Oh one more, can’t help myself – in the spring, tadpoles hatching. OK, done. Have fun!
Dear Quentin,
I asked Mr. Avery the same question. He said that he might not dress up for Halloween this year. We made the video by putting the document camera in the corner and taking a picture once a minute.
Sam R.
Dear Molly’s class,
I’m Molly’s little brother. I loved your day in 55 seconds! It was AWESOME! The clock was going SO FAST!
Love,
George C.
Dear Mr. Avery,
That was a flabtastic video! How on earth did you make it? I was also wondering what you were going to be for Halloween Mr. Avery? I’m gonna be a ninja 🙂
Sincerely,
Quentin C. Hannah’s Friend again heeeheee
Dear Mr. Avery,
I’m having so much fun this year. When will we make another video?
From,
S♥m
Dear Sam,
I’m having the best year too. I don’t know when we are having another video.
Love,
Fiona
Dear Mr. Avery,
This was an awesome video. I wish I had a green screen! Then, I could make a video of my own and make my own blog! Then I could blog a lot.
L♥ve,

Dear Mrs. S.
Thank you for the video it is very cool. I really in joyed it.
L♥ve,

Thanks very much that was a great way to show a day in the life of your classroom. You all looked very busy.
Another use for time lapse photography might be to show the changes in a science experiment over time.
Here is a link to a great time lapse movie of a day at a robotics competition:

Dear Mr. Avery,
It was funny when Ed got suspicious because the document camera was turned to us. It was so funny when at the end went in front of the camera and you gave him the look!
-Kelsea
Boy you guys move fast! ;-). I am glad to see the 6th grade embrace technology! Have fun and keep up the good work!
Dear Dad,
I am very glad to hear that you enjoyed the video. We will be doing a bunch more to put on the classroom blog. Thanks for the comment and we will be putting up more videos real soon.
Sincerely,
Faith H.
Dear Mr. Wick,
Thank you for leaving a comment on our class blog! I thought the video was interesting, too. I thought it was funny how the chair and the lunchbox moved on their own (or did they?) Thanks again for visiting our blog!
~ Emma W.
Hey, that was awesome. Great work and good use of technology! It was challenging, trying to pick out who was who (or is it whom?!) Anyway, I especially liked how you “tucked” the room in for the night, all organized and ready for the next day. Keep up the good work!
Mr. Wick
Dear Morgan M,
Thanks for the comment. Isn’t the video awesome? Also, we will be making more videos and they will be better. 😀
Thanks for the comment.
From,
Kevin B
Dear Mr.Avery
No matter how many times I watch this video, it never gets old. I hope you make more videos like this one.
From,
Morgan M.
Dear Morgan,
I agree! I could watch this video over and over! I think it’s so interesting to see our day in such a short period of time. My favorite is seeing lots of hands go up, people moving around to switch into groups and play Division Dash. I just wish we could’ve used the SmartBoard like we usually do too. Maybe next time!
Thanks for taking the time to write comments!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr. Avery’s class,
Nice video. That was a good idea but I wouldn’t mind watching 7 hours of your class. We should get in contact over Skype or something because my teacher loves technology and we would enjoy doing that with our class. I’m from Mr. Pahl’s class from Sunnyland Bellingham, WA.
Sincerely,
Ashley
Dear Ashley,
I’m glad to know you wouldn’t mind watching 7 hours of our class but I wouldn’t do that to you! I’m not even sure if our video camera would record for that long! We’d be more than happy to connect with your class at some point. It’s always fun chatting and learning about how classes from all over the globe are similar and different.
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr. Avery’s Class,
I love the video of your class day in 55 seconds. It was really fast, but I still saw them going to recess. I think you should do another time-lapse video about walking a dog.
Sincerely,
Emma
A 49’er
Dear Emma,
Walking a dog might be a little tougher to do only because the dog isn’t going to want to stay in one spot to get its picture taken every minute. It’s an interesting idea though. Thank you for visiting our blog. 💡
Sincerely,
Hannah K.
Dear Mr. Avery’s Class,
I really liked the video of your class doing everything in 55 seconds. I saw that you were working on something and then you would disappear and come back. You should do another time-lapse on reading a chapter book.
Sincerely,
Melody
A 49’er
Dear Melody,
Thank you for watching our video. Did you see the lunch box disappear to nowhere?
L♥ve,
Fina
Dear Miss Gale,
Thank you for the comment! It was a fun thing to do. When you do it with your class I recommend that you do not tell you class that you are doing it because they could jump and dance in front of the camera like we did a little. 😆 Again, Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ed S.
Totally love the the idea of “hurrying up” the day, and taking a look at what’s going on in the classroom. I think what’s really interesting is the reflection that can take place afterwards.
For instance, a few questions came to mind when watching this. It seems as though there isn’t a whole lot of movement going on in the room throughout the day, although the afternoon class does appear to rearrange themselves a few times to regroup and move about the room. I’m also intrigued as to why your IWB is just sitting silent in the corner 🙁
Hi Ben,
Thanks for the comment. To answer a couple of your questions, we were finishing up some group work from the previous day where one class was a bit further ahead than the other. The morning group split up once finished with their work to play Division Dash. That’s what the two students close to the camera were doing. The afternoon group split up into three groups and rotated through.
In regards to our IWB, the laptop that it’s hooked into also houses our document camera. We were unable to use it that day because we had the document camera in the corner of the room. It gets used every other day. Next time I’ll have to hook up the document camera to a different computer so we can show a true representation of what happens in our classroom.
Mr. Avery
Hi Mr Avery and class,
That was excellent. I intend to show my students tomorrow morning. They just went home.
It looks like there is lots of collaborative work going on in the class which is exciting.
We’d love to know more about how the video was put together. Did you use different software to make the video or did the document camera do this for you?
Keep up the great work,
Mr Rick K-T and Middle K
Bellaire Primary Schol, Geelong, VIC, Australia
Dear Mr. KT,
Interesting question. Mr. Avery just sets up the document camera in the back of the room, then sets it to take a picture every minute, three minutes, etc. Mr. Avery will probably have a more detailed answer. Thank you for commenting.
Sincerely,
Hannah K.
@ Mr Avery,
Thats amazing!
Mrs Morris wanted to make something like that.
If you want to know that I’ve got a nbew blog. Check it out at: ameliesblog.global2.vic.edu.au hope you like it!
I think that gave lots of ideas.
Thanks,
Amelie
Dear Am♥lie,
Your blog sounds like a lot of fun. We’ll have to visit it some time. Your teacher should totally do that. It was a lot of fun. Thanks for the comment.
Sincerely,
Hannah K.
Now there’s an idea…. the school week in 5 minutes and a school year in three and a half hours. Therefore we could complete our time in school in less than two solid days. 🙂
Time laps is a great way of quickly reviewing space usage and people movement. This was fascinating to watch.
Ross Mannell (teacher)
Australia
Dear Ross,
Thank you for visiting our blog and leaving a comment. Time lapse is SO much fun and it is a great way of teaching kids about time. Your class should do it too. 🙂
Sincerely,
Hannah K.
Dear Mr Avery and class,
That was a great thing to put on the blog.
That a realy cool camera you have got there.
You have really put a lot of things in my head this year.
The class was thincking that we might like that camera thing.
Are you enjoying teaching grade 6?
From Quinn in {2KM}
Dear Quinn,
What a wonderful comment. The cool camera thing is a document camera that stays in the back of the room and takes a picture every minute. Your class should do that too. I don’t know what teaching 6th grade is like but I think Mr. Avery is pretty good at it.
Sincerely,
Hannah K.
@ Mr Avery and class,
I love your post.
First I need to introduce myself my name is Hannah and I am in 2KM.
I think your day was really special it must of been really fun.
A day that you could make the video is if there was a new building you could film it every day it will show you how big it has grown compeared from the day befoure.
Great post again.
Best Wishes,
Hannah
Dear Hannah,
Thank you for visiting the blog. Yeah, it looks like a lot of fun sped up, but slowed down it’s just plain old school work. It’s as if Mr. Avery has the magic touch 😆 I hope you enjoy our future videos.
Sincerely,
Hannah K.
I know we have the same name 🙂
Dear Mr. Avery and class,
Wow! Time flies! I loved watching the clock go round and round as well as the learning going on and on!
I have looked at time lapse photographs of some night sky videos. One of my favorites is Time Lapse in Joshua Tree National Park During the Perseid Meteor Shower. If you search that title, you can watch it yourself. Not only are the Joshua Trees beautiful, you can watch the meteor shower too!
I can’t wait to see what all of you and Mr. Avery come up with next!
Your pal,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Dear Mrs Y♥llis,
It sounds really cool about the meteor shower. Maybe we could some time soon.
Love,
Fiona P.
Dear Mr Avery and class,
Hi my name is Kayla and I’m in Miss Jordans class, also I’m 8 years old.
This is a great post you know.
The video is awesome, 2KJ thorght is looks so cool! And it is.
My Dad has taken photos of the sunset in Fiji, and you could see the clouds move. He is going to make a movie similar to yours with all of the different sunset pictures.
Love,
Kayla in 2KJ
PS. Your blog is awesome!
Dear Kayla,
Thank you for the comment. That is really funny because Miss Jordan wrote a comment too. I bet the sunset photos will look awesome in a movie certainly because of where he took the photos, IN FIJI 😡 I’m jealous.
Sincerely,
Hannah K.
Wow! What a fantastic idea. I showed my class this and they loved it. They would love to do the same thing for our class.
Thanks for sharing.
From Miss Gale
Dear Miss Gale,
Thanks for the amazing comment. I am so glad to hear that your class enjoyed the video. We hope to make more videos to put on the classroom blog :).
Faith H.
Dear Miss. Gale,
Thank you for writing us a comment. I think it’s wonderful that your class would love to do the same thing.
Sincerely,
Fiona P.
Dear Miss Gale,
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. We had tried it before but it was only 5-10 seconds and stoped at 2 or 3 different spots. 🙂
A student of Mr. Avery,
Tessa
Dear Mr Avery,
What a great video! 🙂 Such a clever idea! It was fun watching you and your students go about your day…in less than one minute!
I showed the students in 2KJ just before and they loved watching the speedy shots of you all hard at work. It was funny when we noticd the hands on the analogue clock moving so fast!
I think it would be cool to do a similar thing with the document camera at a sporting event. Perhaps a footy match, as so much happens in our game of AFL every single minute!
I am sure your classroom would be a fantastic place to learn in. I’d love to visit some day!
Best wishes,
Miss Jordan
Dear Miss Jordan,
Thank you for watching our videos. Our class also noticed the clock going around and around. We also noticed that on someone’s desk there was a lunch box and then immediately vanished. It was very exiting. Thank you for visiting our blog.
Sincerely,
Hannah K.
Dear Mr. Avery,
I really liked the video. It’s SO funny. I was kind of dissapointed that you moved to sixth grade because I really wanted to be in your class. Hopefully I will get you in sixth grade! 🙂
From,
Luke Knupp
Dear Luke,
I’m so happy you enjoyed our video! What a wonderful comment as well. And don’t be disappointed there is always a chance in sixth grade like you said! 😆
Sincerely,
Ed S.
Hi Mr Avery and class
Thanks for sharing your amazing video. It was fun to watch – you guys seemed so focussed on your tasks the whole time. It was interesting to watch the video a few times to track certain students – and yes you too Mr Avery – to see where people moved around the room. I liked watching the clock on the wall as well (on rare days I wish it WOULD go that fast). Mr Avery – you always do innovating things and your willingness to share makes you an inspiration. Thanks Jackie Nelson
Wow! Loved the concept and watching the day go by so quickly. Thanks for the opportunity to have a bird’s eye view.
What a great video, now I wish I could figure out a way to do time-lapse in my classroom.
Dear William,
Thank you for the comment. I know the time lapse is pretty awesome. I hope you enjoy our future videos.
Sincerely,
Hannah K.
Dear Mr. Avery
It was so fun “staring” in these videos and fun to watch afterwards.I look forward to making more videos.
Sincerely
Will G.
Dear Will G,
Thanks for the comment. I’m glad you enjoyed the videos and we have more coming. Plus, you are very good at acting.
From,
kevin
We hope you like our future videos. We really love to make them and hope you enjoy the rest of them.
Sincerely,
Kirstyn M.
Dear Mr.Avery
The video is awesome! With the music it looks like a ballet.
From,
Morgan M. 😀
Wow! What a great way to see what a typical day looks like in Grade 6.
Dear Mr.V,
Thank you for the wonderful comment! Its a really quick day in the video but in reality it is a couple of long hours. Also it takes longer to do our school work as well. 😆
Thanks Again,
Ed S.
Dear Mr. Avery’s Class,
I think the video was really fast. I saw kids working in the classroom. You could use a time-lapse video to see a turtle walking because turtles are very slow.
Sincerely,
Cameron
A 49’er
Dear Cameron,
Thanks for the comment. Thanks for visiting our blog. We should visit your blog sometime soon.
Sincerely,
Fiona P.
Dear Cameron,
I think the turtle idea is a good idea. This way we can see it like the turtle is running. If we get a classroom pet and its a turtle, we will try your idea.
Thank you for visiting our blog.
Kelsea R.
Dear Mr. V,
Thank you! It takes Mr.Avery and the class lots of time and great persistence to make these videos! Between shooting and editing we have lots of fun doing these videos!
Sincerely,
Kirstyn M.
Very cool! You could use it for food prep – baking. Preparing for assemblies, drama rehearsals etc. I would love to have a go! Can you organize with a digital camera or just document camera? I have a canon 450d. Must. Investigate. 😉 Have fun from down under ‘waves’ :)).
Jeannette James
Dear Jeannette James,
It would probably be amazing if you used it for baking & food prep… That’s a great idea! I’m pretty sure that you can only do it with a document camera, but I’m not sure so you can give it your best shot!
Sincerely,
Kirstyn M.
