Looking outside the window, with the beautiful landscape of snow, we can definitely tell that winter is here! Winter brings many different feelings and visions. Some think about the holidays. Some think about ice and snow. What do I think about? Well, I think about geometry of course! There are so many different shapes involved with the colder months of the year. An icicle may remind me of an isosceles triangle. A present under the tree perfectly represents a cube or a rectangular prism. It definitely is the most wonderful time of the year!
In class, we’ve been discussing shapes and what they will look like if we flip, slide, or turn them. Students had to create a drawing that reminded them of winter. Within that drawing, they had to show an example of a flip, a slide, and a turn. We then scanned our drawings into the computer and put together a presentation to share what flips, slides, and turns are. Below you can see our result!
I hope everyone has been enjoying your vacation!
*What other shapes can you find during the winter?*
*What have you been doing on your vacation?*
Dear Mr. Avery,
On my vacation I sprained my toe at karate. You probably think I hit someone or something like that but I stubbed it on a mat. It sounds kind of weird but it hurt really bad! I have recovered though. It hurts a little but not as bad a when I first got it. See you soon!
From,

Dear Mr. Avery,
I named my Webkin Dawner because it was a reindeer and it is a boy. Plus I heard Dawner is the best reindeer of all except Rudolph. For winter shapes, I see rectangle forts and spheres for snowballs and Christmas ornaments. Also, I see triangle Christmas trees. Over vacation I went sledding on a plastic sled and landed on ice. I hurt my back so bad!
Sincerely,
Ashley
Dear Mr. Avery,
I found a snow ball and I looked at it and saw a sphere. Then I threw it at my brother. My vacation was so much fun. I went to my cousin’s house for Christmas. Then I went home and played in the snow and slipped on the black ice. Luckily it didn’t hurt though!
From,
Rebecca A.
@Rebecca – A snowball is a great example of a sphere. Christmas ornaments remind me of that shape as well. I’m glad you didn’t hurt yourself when you slipped on the ice!
Dear Mr. Avery,
I had a great vacation. I got to go to the show Disney on Ice with my cousin. Also, I got a lava lamp and a big fuzzy chair. I had a great vacation! How was yours?
Sincerely,
Natalie
@Natalie – I had a great vacation Natalie. Thank you for asking. It’s amazing how much you can get accomplished in a week. It sounds like you had a lot of fun. Did you put the chair and lamp in your bedroom?
Dear Mr. Avery,
I came up with more winter shapes. A snowball is a sphere. A log on the fire could be a rectangular prism. I also did many things over vacation. I went to the Blue Man Group. I had an amazing Christmas. I hope you did too.
From,
Ariel
@Ariel – I love the Blue Man Group! They put on an amazing show. My favorite part was when they have the paint on all the drums and it flies everywhere as they play! I’m glad to hear you had a great Christmas. Mine was amazing as well. Thanks!
Dear Mr. Avery,
I hope I didn’t miss too much on the days I was absent . I think that the video looked fun . I really wanted to be there! I also got tons of stuff for Christmas! I hope you did too.
From,
Alexus
@Alexus – We missed you on those days too! I know you had a lot of fun going away though. I’m glad we do that every year so if you miss it once, you can go to it the following year! I had a great Christmas. It’s always wonderful getting to see all of my family!
Dear Mr. Avery,
I had an awesome vacation all because of Christmas. I got a DSI. It is has Internet and is amazing. It is way better than a normal DS. Also, I got a lava lamp and when you touch it, the light follows the touch of you finger. Plus you can see the bones in your hand as red! I also got a jewlery box and a Webkin.
Sincerely,
Ashley
@Ashley – That sounds like so much fun! I didn’t know you could go on the Internet with the Nintendo DSI. Technology is really amazing these days! It sounds like you had a wonderful time. What is the name of your Webkin?
Dear Mr. Avery,
Shapes that I find in the winter are cubes like ice cubes. Also, the tree ornaments are spheres. My winter vacation was so jovial. I got a lot of smencils, we saw the movie “Tangled,” and went swimming. I miss you. I will see you tomorrow!
Sincerely,
Natalie
Dear Natalie,
I’m so glad you can find different shapes during the winter too! What type of smencils did you get? How was the movie? I’m glad to have you back in school!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
