We’ve been spending time recently working with fractions and mixed numbers. We’ve been learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with them. We found that sometimes working with mixed numbers can be a little bit tricky. When you’re working with subtraction, sometimes you have to borrow from the whole number to make your first fraction larger than your second fraction.
We found that when you’re working with numbers that have fractions that can be found on a ruler, sometimes drawing out lines can really help as well.
With that, we thought now would be the perfect time to complete our first Math Movie Network video of the year. The first video will show you how to add mixed numbers and the second one will teach you how to subtract mixed numbers.

Dear Mr. Avery,
The videos were a real help to me even if I was in them! They help me understand the concept of adding and subtracting mixed numbers. I think we should do more math videos soon.
Sincerely,
Marshall
Dear Mr. Avery,
Everyone did A really good job on the videos! I think we should make many more this year. I like Emily’s method with measuring out the lines.
Sincerely,
Jenna K 🙂
Dear Mr. Avery,
These videos are really good. I think they helped us a lot on adding and subtracting mixed numbers. We should make a lot of videos this year for math. Maybe on ratio or decimals. Good job you guys!
Sincerely,
Jenna K. 🙂
Dear Mr. Avery,
Good job on these videos. They helped me a lot in adding and subtracting fractions. You should make a video about multiplying and dividing fractions.

Our class was inspired by your math movies and now we have started our own math movie network. Students had so much fun teaching other students math concepts. Thank you Mr. Avery and class! We just love your blog!
Congratulations Math Movie Network and students,
I can see how well you have been able to explain addition and subtraction of mixed numbers and the importance of lowest common multiple for the denominator. I think determining the lowest common multiple is one of the trickiest skills for beginners, followed by the need to borrow a whole number when the numerator in the first mixed number is lower than the second in subtraction.
Well done, everyone. 🙂

Mr. Mannell,
Thanks so much for your comment on our videos! It’s definitely one of the trickier things that we’ll be learning this year and I think they did an excellent job explaining it!
I’ve been very impressed with how well these students have been handling these new concepts and their ability to share with others is amazing!
Thanks for all you do as always!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr. Avery.
These videos definitely helped me with adding mixed numbers! I thought that Alexus explained it very clearly the traditional way, she didn’t go to fast so people watching it weren’t confused. I like the way with the ruler also because if people don’t get adding mixed numbers very well, that is a good trick for them. Also, it creates a visual of what adding mixed numbers really is. I want to see videos about negative numbers this year because a lot of people don’t get mixed numbers and you can come up with ways they can understand it. Thank you for working so hard to come up with fun ways to help us learn!

Emily B.
