Last week we received a package in the mail. The first thing that caught our attention was was the address where it was sent from.
In December, you may remember that we received a package from 2KM and 2KJ. We had a suspicion that this package might be from them too. When we opened it, we found a jar of vegemite!
When we had skyped with Mrs. Morris last month, she had just finished having some vegemite for breakfast because it was 6 a.m. for her while it was 2 p.m. the previous day for us! Everyone was very curious as to what it was because we had never heard of it before. She was kind enough to send us a bottle all the way from Australia so we could try it! She said that it typically comes in a jar but a bottle was much easier to ship to the United States.
As we found out, vegemite is a popular spread in places such as Australia and New Zealand. It’s made of yeast extract, spices, and salt. It’s typically eaten on things like toast or crackers. Mrs. Morris even likes to put a little bit of vegemite on toast and then spread some peanut butter on top of that!
We thought we’d give it a try to see if we enjoyed it as much as they did! We got an idea from Mr. Salsich to videotape us trying it so we could share what we thought. You’ll be able to see our video below along with some pictures of us eating vegemite for the first time!
Thank you Mrs. Morris for sending us the package. We enjoyed trying it!
*Have you ever tried vegemite before?*
*What’s the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?*
Dear Mr. Avery,
I don’t know what Vegemite is. I have never had it before and wonder what it tastes like. Does it have a sweet taste? It is cool that they sent you a package with Vegemite inside of it.
Sincerely,
Jenna
Dear Mr Avery,
The weirdest thing I’ve ever eaten was frog legs.I thought it would be very slimy and scaly but it tastes like chicken! They were very good but I probably wont be eating them any time soon!
from,
Jackie D
Dear Mr. Avery
The strangest food but most delicious food I have ever eaten is definitely calamari which is fried up little squids. They look disgusting but are actually very good! I’m planning on trying swordfish so that will probably end up on my list as well!
From,
Amanda K.
Dear Mr. Avery,
That was awesome. People like it and people did not like it. I love it. Are we going to make a video for circles?
Your Student,
Moriah <3
Dear Mr Avery’s class
I have tried vegemite and I like it. I like it on toast with butter without butter it is not very nice. The strangest food I’ve ever tasted is porridge with salt in it. I find that it tasted like play dough.
Yours Sincerely,
Lisa
Hi,
I’m a student from a school in Taradale, New Zealand, and I do NOT like vegemite. It’s yuck but I do like marmite. Marmite is kind of like vegemite but isn’t so salty.
Johanna
Dear Mr Avery,
I haven’t tried vegemite before but I think I would like it a lot. In New Zealand we also have marmite which I like a lot more than other spreads.
Arielle
Charelle and i have both tried vegemite, Charelle thinks it’s alright and I think it’s yummy! But we both don’t like it with Peanut Butter on top of the vegemite!
The stragest thimg Charelle has ever tasted is WORMS! She said: “Everything went into my mouth when I was little!” The strangest thing I’ve ever tasted would have to be play dough! (I ate it when I was about 3 or 4!)
To be honest I really don’t like vegemite on anything I reckon its got a really saltly taste to it.
I’m a student at Taradale Intermediate in New Zealand.
Yours Sincerely
Cody
Dear Allison,
I agree that it was very salty and the video was very funny. I did not finish the whole thing because I did not now what was in it, so at home I looked it up and it said a lot of strange things in it.
Your Friend,
Moran M.
Dear Mr. Avery
I loved watching the video of Vegemite. I did not like the taste of it though. It was very salty.(I don’t think it helped when I put the whole cracker in my mouth.) Bye!
From
Alli W.
Dear Mr. Avery,
I have tried vegimite before. I could’t tell if I liked it or not. It tastes like a mix of salt and a little bit of every food you could think of. I usually don’t try new foods but once I tried Calamari. I’ll never forget that horrid slimy day.
From,
Morgan M ๐
Dear Mr. Avery,
I don’t think I have ever tried Vegemite but the strangest food I have eaten is escargots (snails). ๐ What is the strangest food you have eaten? I personally think escargots is delicous!
From,
Mr. Princiotta ๐
Dear Mr. Avery,
I didn’t really like Vegemite but Tessa really loved it. The strangest thing I’ve ever eaten is calamari. It is tiny squid that is fried in oil.

Dear Grade 6,
I tried Vegemite once when a co-worker brought some back when she traveled to Australia on business. She made it sound like it was going to be the greatest thing ever but I didn’t care for it that much. I’d give it another try sometime but it’s not high on my “to do list”. I think the strangest food I ever had was these freeze-dried worms that I had at work once. They were crunchy and had no flavor at all and the concept was pretty disgusting but I tried it. I’m glad you guys try new foods, especially from other countries, you never know what you might like!
Have a good day,
Emma’s Dad
Dear Dad,
Thank you for leaving a comment on the blog! I am happy I tried the Vegemite, but I don’t think I would eat it regularly. I have tried Finnish pancakes before, and I thought they were pretty good. I sometimes try new things, but if they don’t look that good, I probobly won’t try it:D Thank you for commenting!
Hello Everyone!
I am a first time blogger and loved watching all of you Sixers trying something new. . . very new. I, too, remember Lucille Ball trying to make a commercial for Vegemite on her TV show. She had problems pronouncing it, and when she had to take a bite of it on a cracker, she made a terrible face.
Trying Vegemite is just the beginning of all the new things you Six Graders will encounter as you travel along your individual paths to becoming adults. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Nanni D.
Thank you for leaving a comment! It was very interesting trying the Vegemite. I honestly wasn’t a huge fan, but I would eat it if I had to. I can’t wait to see what else we’ll be doing later on in he year. Thank you for commenting!
Sincerely,
Emma
Dear Mrs. Avery’s Class,
That looks very strange but a little gross! Where did you get it?
Sincerely,
Dalton
Dear Dalton,
Mrs. Morris from Austrailia sent it all the way from Victoria, Australia! I think it one of the most saltiest yet most interesting food I have EVER eaten! ๐ I found out it is really easy to get it online.
A student,
Tessa
Dear Brother of Mine,
Thanks for commenting! It was a little gross, but I would eat it if I didn’t have a choice! We got it as a gift from Australia! Thanks!
~ Emma W
Very interesting video. I remember I Love Lucy making a commercial about Vegemite.
Keep up the good work everyone.
Dear Mr Avery and Grade 6,
I’m guessing from the fact that it’s not mentioned here that you don’t have Marmite in the US? Here in England Marmite is very popular, and although I’ve never had Vegemite, I DO remember the 80s song (like Liz P!) and learning then that Vegemite was like Marmite! Perhaps we should send you some to compare??? It’s love it or loathe it stuff…
Jan 25th is Burns Night for the Scots, and we’ll be having haggis in our house, complete with neeps and tatties. Here’s a haggis question for you:
Which of the following is NOT an ingredient in haggis?
Sheep’s heart
Sheep’s liver
Sheep’s kidney
Sheep’s lungs
Ah yummy! Can’t wait for Saturday now!
Mrs M (http://middlehampri2.posterous.com)
Dear Mrs. Monaghan,
Thanks so much for writing on the blog! A sheep’s kidney isn’t in Haggis. (I looked on Wikipedia) Food you don’t get very often is Hershey Chocolate bars, and Craft Macaroni & cheese. Marmite and Vegemite sound very similar, and I would think they would taste similar too… ๐ Thanks again for commenting!
Sincerely,
Taite B.
Dear Mr. Avery,
I know some people liked the Vegemite.I ♥ the Vegemite. It was so good that I would have it all the time.
Your Friend,
Yana G.
Dear Mr Avery and class,
Thank you for making a video and post to tell me how you liked the Vegemite!
It was interesting to watch your reactions. I’m glad some people liked it.
Like some people said, it is very salty. That’s why it is important to only have a little bit. Not many Australians like to have LOT of Vegemite on their bread or cracker.
I’m not sure what the strangest food I have ever eaten is! I’m not too adventurous when it comes to trying unusual foods!
Did you know that on January 26th, in one week, it is Australia Day? This day is kind of like your 4th July and I bet lots of people will be eating Australian foods!
Your friend,
Mrs Mโrris
Dear Mrs.Morris,
Thank you so much for sending us the Vegemite! I thought it was really good. None of us had ever tried Vegemite before so it was definitely something new for all of us. Thank you also for commenting on the blog. I hope you enjoyed the post about our reactions to Vegemite.
Sincerely,
Will G.
Dear Mr. Avery,
I am Sam R’s babysitter. I think this blog is awesome. Some of their faces when they try the vegemite in the video are funny. It is nice that the kids got to try something new though. I am not sure what the strangest thing I have ever eaten was. I’m always open to trying new foods and I’ll usually try a new food at least once!
Sincerely,
Emily G
Dear Mr. Avery,
I know that a lot of people who tried the Vegemite liked it a lot. I didn’t really like it that much! It was a little too salty for me! I think the strangest thing I have eaten is a whole baby octopus with, this is really gross, fish eggs which are also know as caviar. It wasn’t that gross though!
The fish egg eating 6th grader,

Dear Mr Avery and grade six’s,
How wonderful that Mrs Morris sent you a tube of vegemite. I have to say you all did well having a sample of vegemite.
I really enjoy eating vegemite on my toast every morning.
However in saying this vegemite is not for everyone as it really does have a certain taste which some people love and some really dislike.
Well done to you all for tasting this Aussie spread.
Yours sincerely,
AA.
Hi guys,
Good on you Grade Six for trying something new. Here in Australia, we love our Vegemite. My fourteen month old girl is eating some right now. She loves it but it can be quite messy when you are just learning to eat! Did you know that our Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, presented President Barack Obama with a jar of Vegemite when she visited him in the Oval Office?
The strangest thing I have ever eaten is sheep’s brains. They were nowhere near as yummy as Vegemite, let me tell you!
Keep up the great work guys! Good to see that you are ‘happy little vegemites” — Check out YouTube if you are not sure what I mean:
Happy Little Vegemites
Sincerely,
Paul
Dear Mr. Avery’s class,
Oh my gosh! The first time I ever heard about Vegemite was in a very popular song waaaaayyyyy back in the 1980’s called Down Under by a group called Men At Work. I loved the song… wasn’t so crazy about Vegemite. It wasn’t bad, but I guess it is an acquired taste. I suppose it’s all what you’re used to. Some people might not care for many of my favorite foods. But it is important to continue to try new things, even if you didn’t like them the first time. You never know when you might find a new favorite!
Sincerely,
Liz P.
Dear Mom,
I know I like to try new things! Calamari and mussles are awesome but lobster is even better! I am looking forward to trying many more foods in the future!
Your daughter,
Tessa
Dear Liz P.
Thank you for visiting and commenting on our blog. I personally liked Vegemite a lot, although it is quite salty! I would love too see that commercial about Vegemite, and I’m sure my classmates would too! You’re right about trying new foods too. Visit our blog again!
Sincerely,
Will G.
Dear Mr Avery and Grade 6
Well done for giving a new flavour a try!
I enjoy Vegemite on toast and on crackers with a slice of cheese.
I especially like Vegemite spread on bread, covered with cheese and put under the grill to melt.
Some people add Vegemite when they make gravy, but I’m not personally a fan of that.
The strangest food I’ve ever eaten? That might be brawn, which is like a meat jelly. My grandmother used to make it by boiling up a pig head and adding some other ingredients. (I hope I haven’t grossed you out!)
I’ve also had haggis, which is a traditional Scots dish.
I’ll be interested to read about the most unusual foods YOU have tried!
best wishes
Mrs Mckenzie from B4 in New Zealand
Dear Mrs. Mckenzie and B4,
Thank you for the comment! The strangest food I have ever tried was alligator. What does meat jelly taste like? Have you ever tried alligator before? I also did enjoy vegemite. You defiantly have to spread it because a big glob is so salty in my opinion. Overall I did like it.
Sincerely,
Ed S.
