The Math Movie Network is back, bringing you the latest from our sixth grade classroom! This time, some of our experts provide you with a look at how to solve problems with exponents and the order of operations.
One of the topics that we’ve been learning all about are exponents. Much like where multiplication is used instead of repeated addition, exponents are used in lieu of repeated multiplication.
Take a look as Ryan, Taite, Sam, and Bryan share how to solve exponents!
We’ve also been learning about the order of operations. Sometimes, you’ll find a math problem that contains more than one operation in it. When this occurs, there is a certain order in which the problem must be solved. We often use the term PEMDAS to help remind us of the order. PEMDAS stands for parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.
Kylie, Rachele, Tessa, and Allison will share a couple examples of problems in which the order of operations is used.
*What are some examples times where you might have to use an exponent?*
*When might you need to use more than one operation in a problem?*
Dear Mr. Ailstron,
Thank you for the comment. We hope to make more MMN videos soon.
Sincerely,
Faith
The MMN is awesome!

Dear Mr. Avery,
I think I sounded very odd in the video. The other class was great. Our class did great too though. It’s SO great that all of the videos got featured by those people!
Sincrely,
Turtles π
Dear Turtles,
I don’t think you sounded odd at all. Thank you for conmenting on our video.
Love,
Fiona/Penguins
Do you ever skype with anybody. We would like to skype with you.
Dear Savannah,
Our class Skypes every so often. It’s funny you asked because we’re skyping with another class from Connecticut. As much as I’d like to skype, you’d have to ask Mr. Avery about it. Thanks for checking out our classroom blog!
Sincerely,
Taite B.
Dear Miss Steph,
Thank you for visiting our blog. We are glad that you liked our videos, and we hope that they will help your students learn. I’m not quite sure how he did the background in the video but I think that Mr. Avery has made a couple videos about how he makes the Math Movie Network videos. If you’re interested in watching the videos then you can go to most any video, and on the bottom is the word Vimeo. Click on Vimeo and on the right side of the screen you can see all of the videos that we’ve made.
Sincerely Mr. Avery’s 6th grade student,
Bryan C.
Dear Mrs. Hembree,
Thanks so much for visiting our blog. We hope we can help you remember more math terms as we go through the year. We work hard at every video we do and will hopefully have a BLOOPERS video up on the blog at some point in the year. Thanks again we hope to see another comment from you soon.
Sincerely,
Taite B.
Hi Mr. Avery’s class,
What a fantastic video! This is my second time to your blog and I love your posts. Last time I watched and left a comment on the video of Mr. Avery rapping about math! I think these videos are great because it allows others to learn in a fun way. How do you make the background in this video?
I’m a student teacher and I am very interested in teaching math to the older grade levels. I will definetly keep in mind teaching math in a fun way like this!
Thanks!
Miss Steph (student teacher)

Hi Miss Steph,
Thanks for leaving a comment! We’re glad to have you visit!
The videos are actually from movietools.biz. I did have to pay for a package but the price isn’t too bad. They also have some free ones on movietools.info. That’s a great place to start.
I hope that helps a little!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr. Avery and the Math Students,
Awesome work on the math videos! Your expanation of how to do these problems is clear and really helpful! I love the introduction to the math movies, too! They seem so professional!
You are bringing back a lot of math concepts that I had forgotten about!
The Math Dazed Seattle Librarian,
Mrs. Hembree
Dear Mrs. Hembree,
We’re glad we were able to refresh your memory! Sometimes we find that if you don’t use something for a while, you tend to forget it. That’s why we always do a lot of review in class!
We hope that with our videos this year, we’re able to have something to look back on to remember how to use these concepts and we’ll be able to teach other classes as well!
Thanks for all the great comments you always leave us!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr. Avery,
I really liked these videos! I think they’re super cool and I love the backgrounds for the videos. I also liked the music. I’m happy we got some videos up since we haven’t in a while!
Sincerely,
Kirstyn M.
Hi Kirstyn,
I love the backgrounds to the videos too. It’s amazing that there are so many great sites out there that we can get those backgrounds from.
We’ll probably do about one video a month. We need to make sure that we learn and understand a new topic beforehand! About half of the grade has been able to make a video though. Two more videos for each class and everyone will have been able to make one!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr. Avery,
I loved watching how Ryan, Sam, Bryan, and I did in our exponent video. I thought the other class did a great job with their video too and they did a great job because for me explaining PEMDAS is a tad bit hard. I hope we make another math video because they’re fun to watch and it makes everything a lot easier to learn. You’re a great teacher Mr. Avery!
Sincerely,
Taite B.
Hi Taite,
I think they did an amazing job, in both classes! I think that order of operations can be difficult sometimes just because there are so many steps. As long as you can remember PEMDAS and use it to help you though, you should be able to get through just about any problem!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Hi my name is Taedyn and I really like your blog. It is so cool, honestly.
Could you please leave a comment on my blog?

I think you might know Ashton.

Dear Taedyn,
Thanks so much for checking out our blog… I checked out your blog and the animated stick figure made me laugh. We hope to see another comment from you very soon. Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Taite B.
Hi Taedyn,
I definitely remember Ashton commenting on here before! Is he in your class?
Thanks for visiting. I’d be happy to visit and comment on your blog sometime!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Taedyn,
I LOVE your blog! The animated dancing stick figure made me laugh so hard and could brighten anyone’s day! π I want to get one on this blog! Have a great day! ~HAPPY BLOGGING~
SINCERELY,
ALYXANDRA
Dear Mr. Avery,
The MATH MOVIE NETWORK is coming along great. The videos are very creative. They’re really fun to make too. I know you always tell us to keep on working when you are taping the other students but it’s just so hard! I wonder if other teachers let them watch or if they can’t too (and the students peek anyways)?
Reply please,
Molly C.
Hi Molly,
Thanks for commenting! I think it’s great that you want to watch. It means what we’re doing in class is interesting. I think the best part about the videos are that everyone in class is able to teach everything so well! That shows that everyone really understands what we’re working on.
Everyone still needs to work during the videos though! We’d lose a lot of class time if everyone else just watched during the videos. Plus, I think a few people would end up being extremely nervous if everyone was watching them!
Keep working hard,
Mr. Avery
Aloha Mr. Avery & sixth graders,
Great explanations exponents and order of operation. Also, picked up a new trick when working with ten.
Hope you are having a terrific day!
A hui hou,
Mrs. Jacobs
Mrs. Jacobs,
Thanks for all the great comments you always leave us! Everyone in class is so jealous that you live in Hawaii. We were wondering, what is life like on an island? Which island do you live on?
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery’s class
Dear Mr. Avery’s class,
The Math Movie Network is awesome! Thank you for sharing another brillant movie with us. We love your style and how you explain each concept. We are in fifth grade, so we have not learned about exponents yet. However, we do think that the actors helped us to understand this new idea. We appreciated that the vocabulary was talked about first and then used in the problem. We also liked how the students displayed their work on the board. That really helped our visual learners. Another strategy that was helpful was listing PEMDAS on the board and checking each letter off as the operation was completed.
Well done!
Mrs. Moore’s Class
Hi Mrs. Moore and class,
We’re glad we were able to introduce you to exponents and the order of operations! Hopefully it will help when you learn about it next year!
We still have to try to find a time when we can Skype so we can learn all about what school is like in Michigan!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
