Dr. Decimal: Removing Decimals from the Divisor
However, we eventually ended up running into some problems that also had decimals in the divisor. We learned that to solve these problems, we had to make our divisor a whole number. In order to do that, we have to move our decimal over one space. If we move our decimal over one space in our divisor, we also have to move our decimal over one space in the dividend to even things out.
Once we’ve made our divisor a whole number, now we’re able to solve the division problem. Having these decimals in the divisor is a problem that has to be taken care of. If seen, they need to be removed. Luckily, we had Dr. Decimal and Nurse Negative from the Avery County Medical Center who put together a public service announcement to remind us about how to deal with those pesky decimals, which can be seen at the top of this post.
Thank you for the informative video, I forgot that you had to remove decimals from the divisors, and was trying without removing and kept getting the problem wrong. Appreciate this, I enjoyed the video as well. It is good to do things by hand, I always assume that it is much harder than it is to write out. This is coming from someone who took and got an A in Calculus. Oh how dependent I have become on the calculator. Its quite humbling. Thank you for the informative blog and video!
Hello,
I am a student in EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama. I thought the video with Dr. Decimal and Nurse Negative was great! I honestly forgot what to do if there was a decimal in the divisor. It’s been quite a while since I tackled a division problem like that by hand. Before the video, I probably would have just reached for a calculator and have it solve the problem for me. Now I know it’s as simple as moving the decimals over, and I should be able to solve it on my own. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Hello. My name is Amelia Bumpers and I am an EDM310 student at the University of South Alabama. I think Dr. Decimal and Nurse Negative is a great way to teach math. It is interesting and entertaining and it keeps the attention of students. I will be showing this video to the math teachers at the elementary school that I observe in! I loved it.
