Thursday was an absolutely beautiful day. The clouds had parted from the day before and the sun had cast its light. Luckily, Thursday just so happened to also be the day of our field trip to Heritage Museum!
Every year, the fourth grade takes a trip to these beautiful grounds to visit the gardens and exhibits. Before we began our tour, we were given a brief history about the museum. We learned that the land was originally settled on in 1677 by a woman named Lydia Wing Hamilton Abbott. Centuries later, in 1921, the land was bought by a man named Charles Owen Dexter. Upon taking up residence here, he began experimenting with hybridizing, or combining, different types of rhododendrons. He planted many on these lands. Later, the land was taken over by the Lilly family. They eventually turned it into a museum to share the amazing gardens. They also added buildings to house antique cars and an old, hand-carved carousel.
We were able to spend the day on a tour where we able to ride the carousel, sit in a Ford Model T, and learn about many forms of transportation throughout time. After lunch, the students were then able to explore in groups and found themselves in the new Hidden Hollows area where they were able to climb and play. You can view the slideshow below to see all the fun we had throughout the day!
We had an absolutely amazing day. We had perfect weather. We got to go on a great tour. Best of all, the students were able to make Mr. Avery roll down a hill! There’s even video to prove it! After the students had an opportunity to roll down the hill, which our tour guide says is always one of her favorite parts, they convinced their teacher to take a tumble. You can see videos of both below!
It was certainly a day that we will always remember. We just wish we had another day to spend there!
*What was your favorite part about the field trip?*
*What did you learn while you were there?*
*If you could go back, what one part would you want to visit most?*
Dear Mr. Avery,
My favorite part about the field trip besides the carousal was Hidden Hollow because it was so much fun. They had everything. I wish that that was my backyard that would be awesome.

Dear Mr. Avery,
My favorite part was going to Hidden Hollow because you could go into the woods and lie down on hammocks. It was very cool. Also, I really liked going to the car museum. I saw a lot of old antique cars and motorcycles. The carousel was very was cool too. I liked the lead horse the best. It was plated in silver armor. I hope I can go there again in the future. 🙂

Dear Mr. Avery,
I loved the museum so much! My favorite was the carousel! I want to bring my mom and dad
there. You picked an awesome field trip!
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Avery,
The Heritage museum was so much fun. I loved the carousal. On the video it looked like it was going really fast. My favorite part was riding on the carousal. My second favorite part was the old cars. We all got to sit in one. I loved all the nature and all the flowers. I saw a chipmunk climb up the tree and it was really cute. All the flowers smelled great. I loved how they had name tags on the trees. They had some weird names for trees. I loved the walk and how it was all curvy. I loved how the person who made the ducks carved the ducks so neatly. I could never do that. I will want to go back all the time. I will go back again sometime. I had so much fun. I love fourth grade so much and don’t want to go to fifth grade.

Dear Mr. Avery,
I loved the field trip! If I went back I would want to go to Hidden Hollows! My group with Jenna’s mom and the group with Colin’s mom got lost in a truck path and thought that was Hidden Hollows. I got there when I had about two minutes left! It was so fun!
Sincerely,
Ashley ;D
Dear Mr. Avery,
My favorite part of the field trip was the carousel because it was so much fun. It was so magical. I had fun on everything else too.

Dear Heston,
I agree. The carousel was so much fun! I think many of you would’ve loved to have gone around a few more times!
My favorite was probably Hidden Hollows. It just opened so I had never seen it before. It looked like such a fun place to play.
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr. Avery,
If I could go back to the Heritage Museum I would like to visit Hidden Hollows the most because I didn’t get to see that very much. I would just love to visit all of the wonderful exhibits! <3

Dear Rebecca,
I think Hidden Hollows would be a great choice. I think it will be even better once the giant tree house is finished! It’d be so much fun to climb around in that.
There are so many great things to see there. I think you could easily spend a day there and still not be able to see everything you wanted!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr. Avery,
I hope you had a nice time rolling down the hill. You looked like you had a fun time. Were you dizzy after? I really enjoyed going on the carousel. Did you have a fun time on the carousel?
From,
Ariel
Dear Ariel,
I had a great time rolling down the hill. I was a little bit dizzy afterwards. I wasn’t too bad though!
The carousel was also a lot of fun. I think it was really neat how all the horses were hand-carved. I can only imagine how much time and effort that must have taken!
I’m glad you had fun on the field trip.
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery

Hi Mr. Avery,
We just wanted to say great job on all of the blogs and posts. We have enjoyed looking at them all. What a wonderful job! It has been a great year for Mike and I’m sure he will miss having you for his teacher next year!
Thank you for writing in. It’s been a great class so we’ve had plenty to share this year! I hope both Mike and Nick continue to write in. I’ll be checking in on them to make sure they’re working hard!
Hello to Mr. Avery and all the students who visited Heritage recently! We are pleased to hear that you had such a fun day here. Rolling down the hill near the Herb Garden is one of our favorite things to watch kids do! (and teachers, of course, too).
Thank you for sharing your visit with others on Mr. Avery’s blog. It’s always a pleasure to hear back from our guests after their visit. We hope you are able to visit with us again sometime soon.
Kind regards,
Libby Knott

Mrs. Knott,
Thank you for taking the time to write in to us. We definitely enjoyed our trip there! The students loved the carousel as you can probably tell from the comments. They also really enjoyed Hidden Hollow. Many were disappointed we were out of time and I’m sure they’ll be back to visit with their families.
Thank you for a wonderful day!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
