As we were leaving school on Thursday, one question seemed to be on everyone’s mind, “Are we going to have school tomorrow?” We just so happened to have these two storms bearing down on us, ready to combine into one giant storm that was supposed to drop A LOT of snow on us.
Well, it just so happened that we didn’t have school on Friday because of it. The storm rolled through on Friday and Saturday and by the end of it, most of us found ourselves without power. It dropped up to two feet of snow on us as well as bringing winds close to 75 miles per hour! That’s a hurricane force wind! Because of that, we also didn’t have school on Monday or Tuesday. Some of us are just now starting to get our power back on today!
Even though we thought we got a lot of snow, with some of us receiving about 24 inches, places in Connecticut received upwards of 40 inches of snow from this blizzard! So what caused this storm to be so powerful? It was actually two storms that combined into one. There was one storm that was coming up from the south that had a lot of moisture in it. There was another storm moving in from the west that was part of a cold front that brought cold temperatures. When these two storms collided, they formed a much larger, much more powerful storm with a lot of moisture and temperatures that brought us snow.
NASA released an satellite animations of the two storms coming together. You can see just what happened to bring them together and then what they looked like after they combined.

Dear Mr. Avery,
During the storm, my dog kept going outside and getting covered inn snow. When the cat came in, he looked like a snow monster. after the storm, my dog went out onto the porch and thought he could walk on the snow. He walked over to it and did a sort of belly flop onto it and then sank into the snow so we could only see his nose. I would say that’s the most snow we’ve ever gotten.

Dear Mr.Avery,
It was a very rough storm. My cousins, sister, and I had a giant snowball fight. I was on a team with my cousin Emma and my cousin Derek. All my sister and my cousin Molly did was run. We have a big wood stove so it was easy to cook. We have a generator but it broke during the storm. Luckily are next door neighbor fixed it. At my house it was definetly a difficult storm.

Dear Mr. Avery,
This storm was annoying! I wish we had power during this because it was really cold. And my poor birds must have been FREEZING! My Grandma and Grandpa magically had power! So we went over there after the blizzard stopped snowing. They were so lucky! I wish I could be as lucky as them 🙁 .

Dear Mr. Avery and class,
Boy, I wish we didnt have school for 3 days because of snow (just without the lost power). Here in Michigan our record (while I’ve been alive) was in 1999 when my house was being built we had about 3 feet of snow! My question is what did you do when you lost power and the wind was like a hurricane outside? did you play Monopoly? Cards? Talk? Did you cook over a fire? Did anyone have a backup generator? it must’ve been crazy! Well i hope you guys are all doing good! Have a good week!
Sincerley,
Keegan

Hi Keegan,
It’s always nice to get a few days off. However, it’s not that much fun without power. I know some people had a backup generator but I didn’t unfortunately so I froze! Now all is back to normal though! Thanks for the comment!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr. Avery,
Thanks for replying to my comment! It’s more fun to blog when you get a response! This is a great blog site, keep up the good work!
Stay toasty warm,

Hi this is my first time commenting on some blog. Have you seen my blog.

Hi there Mr. Avery and crew,
The kids in my class couldn’t believe how unfair it is that you are able to have a day off school because of too much snow! I think they are jealous! In Australia at this time of year we are on high alert for bush fires…not snow storms and blizzards! We are melting at school at the moment! We took a look at your blog again today and my students wanted to watch your Avery Bunch movie clip AKA Brady Bunch. We all thought it was very clever indeed! What program’s did you use? Is it as hard as it looks?
We look forward to hearing from you in the future.
Mrs. Sinnott and 5/6S
Hello Mr. Avery,
I know pretty much the entire north east lost power. So, having two younger siblings and my grandfather freezing in a powerless house, we decided to go to a hotel. As we expected, the majority was booked or had no power. eventually, my mom found a nice hotel in New Bedford. turns out the hotel was in Bedford. To tell you the truth, I didn’t even know there WAS a Bedford, Massachusetts! Soon we found a ‘teaching’ hotel (a hotel that trains the people working there how to run a hotel, they did a pretty good job.). Only down side was that the hotel seemed to lack one very important detail. No pool. 🙁 oh well. The hotel was in Seekonk. A short distance to Providence. So, of course we had to go the Providence Place mall! We went to Dave and Buster’s for lunch. It was the first time I had ever been there! It was so much fun! So, sorry for all you other guys who froze, but i got new shoes and won a big stuffed bear in a huge mall. 🙂
Sincerely,
Molly C
P.S I got a blog.
Dear Mr Avery and class,
We get our fair share of snow in the north of England, and we’ve had snow a couple of times this week. Yesterday it came down unexpectedly and started to fall heavily after lunch… we thought we’d make it through to hometime but there was high adventure on the buses home, as they couldn’t get through to the small outlying villages, and got stuck on the moor! Fortunately the children were rescued by farmers & neighbours with 4×4 vehicles, and everyone got home safely in the end… and this morning, all the snow was gone!
There are usually one or two days in a year when we don’t make it to school because of the snow. This is usually not because of the depth, but because of dangerous road conditions and the difficulty of getting there. We watched your snowstorm with interest in the UK – it was certainly a lot more snow than we ever get here!

A Room with a View
Hello to All,
The Blizzard of 2013 was a big one for sure. When I was 13 we had a Blizzard. My Mom and I lived in an apartment. The doors and windows were completely covered over with snow. I had to jump out of my upstairs bedroom window into a snow bank(with my Mom watching me closely), . Mom then through me a shovel so I could shovel out our doors and then we could get out if we had chosen too. We had no electricity for 2 weeks. No generator or telephone either. There were NO cell phones then, can you imagine??? My friends and I had great fun playing in the snow. Thank God that we had a gas stove, so we could have hot easy meals…

Dear Mr.Avery,
Wow, what a lot of snow! In Michigan we got about a foot of snow. I hope you stay warm and safe in all that snow. We had a snow day and I spent my day sledding and building a giant snowman. What did you guys do? How many days off did you get?
Sincerely,
Ashley

Dear Mr. Avery and class,
My sister lives in Conneticut near Massachucetts and also got a lot of snow at school. She sent some pictures of sidewalks with walls of snow 5 feet high on both sides. We’ve had some snow here in Michigan but not more than a foot. I’m sure it’s a lot of fun playing in that much snow. The last time we had that much snow my brother and I dug tunnels through snow banks!
Sincerely,
Riley

Dear Mr. Avery and Class,
It’s really cool to read all about your expieriences in the snow! I live in Michigan, so we don’t always get a lot of snow here. But, we did get about 10 inches of snow this year, but it isn’t nearly as much as you guys! I think I liked it last year when we hardly got any snow and it felt like Spring in the winter. Stay safe in the snow and have fun!
From,
Katey

Dear Mr. Avery,
In Michigan we get a lot of snow too! My favorite snow activities are sleeding, making snowmen, and drinking hot cocoa. What is your favorite snow activity? I really enjoyed seeing all the pictures! This is my first comment on a blog. Hope to see more pictures and videos!

Dear Mr. Avery and Class,
Wow, two feet of snow! That is a lot of snow! We have never been in a snowstorm, but one of us has been in snow. It has never snowed here at San Antonio.(Only once.)
Sincerely,
Ainsley and Alexis
Dear Mr.Avery,
This is Addi, Karrisa and Ethan J. from Mrs. Kistler’s class. If we were over there we would be very cold. We are not used to having snow in San Antonio, Texas. In December, it almost never snows in San Antonio. It`s very hot in the summer, but it is warm in December.
Sincerely,
Addi, Karissa, Ethan J.
Dear Mr. Avery,
I had quite the adventure this blizzard. First we lost power and my dad got really sick! It was awful. Once my dad was a little bit better we packed our bags and left ( because our house was FREEZING and we had no generator). After searching we finally found a hotel, and stayed there for a night. We still had no power and nowhere to go so we stayed at a better hotel. Finally we went to my Uncle’s house where I had fun with my cousins. From there I went to school and now we finally have power back! Did you lose power? Anyway great post, I love the picture of your dog, he is so cute!
From,
Emily B.
Dear Mr Avery and Students,
You were very descriptive. We like how you have pictures, words and video. You are lucky you missed school. Our school never closes for snow days.
Could you open your door with all that snow. What did you do with no power? Was it exciting or scary staying home? Did you know there are different kinds of snow. Come check out our blog at htt://walkthisway1.edublogs.org to see our posts about Snow!

Dear Mr. Avery and Class,
I live in San Antonio, TX. We rarely get any snow here. I never knew that snow was that heavy to knock down a tree and that was a lot of snow that you guys got too. I hope everyone is okay.
Sincerely,
Abigail H.
Dear Mr. Avery and Class,
Wow, that snow storm was 2 feet tall? We are suprised that a snow storm can knock a tree down on!
Sincerely,
Arykai, Alyssa and Jeremiah
Dear Mr.Avery and Class,
Wow, that was a lot of snow! It must have been very cold and dangerous, we can tell. We do not get that much snow here. We’re in San Antonio, Texas.
Sincerely ,
Lily, Ethan and David
Dear Mr. Avery and Class,
We can’t believe that you had 40 inches of snow! We wish we could get snow like that here in San Antonio.
Sincerely,
Miller and Isabel
Dear Mr. Avery and Class,
You guys got a lot of snow! Here, in San Antonio TX, we never get snow storms. We’ve seen snow, but it’s never really been here.
Sincerely,
Luke and Maya
Dear Mr. Avery and Class,
We were all amazed by the power of the storm. We learned that two storms can combine and become even more powerful! We’ve only had eight kids who’ve been in a snowstorm. Most of the students here are not around snow very often. We’re glad everyone there is safe.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kistler

Dear Mr. Avery
Your post caught my attenion. We have been getting a lot of snow in Michigan, but not as much as you. We have had three snow days in the past ten days.
Sincerly,

Techie Kids
Dear Devin,
I’m glad that you haven’t gotten as much snow as us because we lost power for a few days and just walking in the snows was VERY tired! But it was fun after it melted a little bit.
-Rebecca A.
Dear Mr.Avery,
I read your post on all the snow you got. In Michigan, we got about nine inches of snow. I have a friend in Massachucetts and she got a TON of snow.
The most snow I can remember is about a foot. I was wonderng if you got snowed in. We have had two snow days in this past seven days and four during the year.
Sincerely,
Arianna
Techie Kids
Dear Arianna,
We got a lot of snow. This was a huge storm that everyone was exited that we had no school.
I lost power for 4 days. Since it was so cold my fish died. I learned that he is a tropical fish.
From,
Ariel
Dear Ariel,
I’m so sorry about your fish. My fish died too. Well, if you get another fish, you will know not to get a fish like your old one. My fish was a goldfish that was three or four years. I was surprised that he lived that long because I got him from a fair. Techie Kids has a post on snow if you wast to see some pictures. The link http://edublogs.misd.net/techiekids/ is to the Techie Kids blog. The post is the first one you would see.

Dear Mr. Avery ,
The storm was kind of scary for me because a big tree fell down on my driveway and the power lines came with it so the power lines were across my porch so we couldn’t get out or get in that door so we had to go in the back door. Also, the meter got ripped off my house. Yesterday I got my power back thanks to the electric person and the power company. During the storm we were very worm because we have a fire place and it kept the house very warm,
Sincerley, Jen C.
Dear Mr. Avery and class,
That was quite a snowstorm! I know not having power was probably one of the worst parts of the storm, but what was the best part?
Was it really fluffy snow or the kind you can pack down and make snow forts and snow sculptures?
I remember one storm in MA when we had bunches of snow. Our driveway was full and the drifts were awesome. We made tunnels and had so much fun.
Great photos! Thanks for sharing! I miss the snow!
From, Mrs. Hembree
Dear Mrs. Hembree,
I agree with you that losing power is the worst part of the storm. I think that the best part of that storm was the snow fort or as some people call them snow caves.
Sincerely,
Marshall S.
Dear Mr Avery and students,
The big snowstorm that you had made it on to the news programs here in New Zealand, and we were thinking of you all.
The most snow I can remember in our town was just in April last year, but we got nowhere near 40 inches!
At home we decided a few years ago to make sure we were well prepared for power cuts. We can cook meals on our barbeque, and we also have a camp oven that we can use on a backyard fire place. We have some big containers of water stored. A few drops of bleach keeps the water useable.
How have your families prepared for power cuts and snow days?
Warm wishes,
Mrs McKenzie
Dear Mrs McKenzie,
At my house we have a generator, but during the storm it broke. Thanks to are neighbor we were able to use it again. We cooked with wood stoves. I put fake candles in my room so I could see if I had to get up in the middle of the night. My cousin stayed over the entire storm.

I have never seen snow before and I do want to see it.
Do you know how long it takes for the snow to melt?
Write to you soon,
